Awakening
This Psalm comes from Psalm 8, which is pretty well known. Below is the first half of the Psalm (it is a short one!)
“Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You set Your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of infants and children you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I think of your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars you have set into place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You set them a little lower than the angels, and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands.”
Some of the lines of this song that I loved were “We’re all searching for meaning, but the more we reason the more we’re sleeping to the story unfolding. Wake us up to you.” We have no idea the breadth of the majesty of God. What is a little unnerving is that I find way more purpose in my life when I realize how truly great and worthy of praise God is…and I am not. But, at the same time this Psalmist paints an amazing picture that God crowned us (who SO do not deserve it) with glory and honor, making us in His image. Sometimes we make God too small. But, sometimes, even though we are small, we make ourselves entirely insignificant, which we are not. We deserve to be, but we aren’t because of God’s great mercy and love for us. This true reality of balancing these two…we don’t naturally come by this. We have to awaken to these truths. This song is a call for God to open my mind to this truth!
Awakening
In the cold dark mornings, all I can see are the stars
We’re all searching for meaning
But the more we reason the more we’re sleeping
To the story unfolding
Wake us up to You You set Your glory in the heavens
Oh Lord, You are majestic; we need awakening
You are the Author of creation
Worthy of all our praises; we need awakening Reveal Your power; Let Your glory and splendor amaze
One glimpse of Your radiance would leave us breathless all our days
We all want what’s beyond this life
Nothing’s the same when it’s seen through Your eyes
So bring this change on the inside; We want to be made new
So wake us up to You
When I consider the works of Your hands
Crowning us with the glory of Your image
Calling us to awaken Let us see as we were made to see
Let us live as we were meant to be
Let us see as we were made to see
Let us live as we’re awakening
